As the first foreign-funded diesel engine company to come to China for localized production, Cummins has been established with leading Chinese companies including Dongfeng Motor, Chongqing Electromechanical, Shaanxi Automobile Group, Beiqi Foton, Liugong Group, and Jianghuai Automobile for more than 40 years. Six engine joint ventures have been established, and 15 of Cummins’ 24 engine series have been produced locally in China.
Cummins is an early foreign power supplier that established a R&D center in China. In August 2006, the engine technology R&D center jointly established by Cummins and Dongfeng was opened in Wuhan, Hubei. In addition to developing the most suitable products for the Chinese market, Cummins China Technology Center is also expanding its cooperation with Chinese partners in the field of research and development. So far, Cummins has 4 R&D centers in China, including Cummins East Asia R&D Center, Wuxi Turbocharging Technology Center, Chongqing High-horsepower Technology Center, and Shanghai Hydrogen Energy R&D Center (opening in 2023).
In 2021, Cummins’ sales in China (including joint ventures) will be US$7.4 billion, and the production and sales of engines will exceed 640,000 units. China has become one of the largest and fastest growing overseas markets for Cummins in the world.
