On May 9, 2022, at the ACT Expo in California, Cummins showcased its latest 15L hydrogen internal combustion engine. The engine is based on Cummins’ latest multi-fuel engine platform, where most of the components below the engine head gasket are structurally similar, while above the cylinder head gasket, different combinations of parts are used depending on the type of fuel.

As an important part of Cummins’ strategy to advance the zero-carbon goal, the engine can use clean, zero-carbon hydrogen as fuel to help customers accelerate greenhouse gas reduction.
Srikanth Padmanabhan, President of Cummins Engine Division, said: “Cummins’ PLANET 2050 Sustainability Strategy sets out a series of important goals, including achieving zero carbon emissions. Achieving “well-to-wheel” carbon reduction requires innovation The application prospect of electric power and fuel cell powertrain is promising. At the same time, with the help of reliable internal combustion engine technology, the hydrogen internal combustion engine fueled by green hydrogen will become an important supplement to the zero emission solution in the future. ”

As early as July 2021, Cummins has begun hydrogen internal combustion engine testing with strong early results, achieving set power and torque targets (medium engine: over 810ft-lbs of torque, over 290hp). In addition, more advanced prototype testing will be carried out soon. Relying on Cummins’ strong global production base layout, large-scale production can be quickly realized.

Our industry requires diverse solutions to meet the application needs of on-road and off-road customers, operating conditions and operating environments. As an innovative zero-carbon fuel solution, Cummins hydrogen internal combustion engines can meet multiple market needs. Cummins will produce 15L and 6.7L hydrogen internal combustion engines, and it is believed that these new products will help the industry take practical steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ultimately accelerate carbon emissions reductions.

Jim Nebergall, general manager of Cummins Hydrogen Engines, said: “Cummins has the expertise, advanced tools and abundant resources to help our customers make the transition to zero carbon smoothly. Hydrogen internal combustion engines look and sound like familiar engines. And easy to fit into existing vehicles, this innovative and practical technology is welcomed by customers.”

Hydrogen internal combustion engines can run on zero-carbon fuels, are compatible with existing vehicles, require few changes to the vehicle, and have low initial application costs. Thanks to the advantages of high technology maturity, low initial application cost, wide vehicle application range, short hydrogenation time, and strong powertrain installation versatility, the application of hydrogen internal combustion engines in vehicles is expected to be further accelerated.

Daryl Wilson, Executive Director of the Hydrogen Council, said: “Heavy truck transportation is an integral part of the economy and is critical to the development of the global economy. We are very encouraged by the progress Cummins has made in the development of hydrogen internal combustion engines and look forward to the future. There are more breakthroughs to help us decarbonize the world in a cost-effective way.”
